Pastry dragon:
2 frozen pastry sheets (Pepperidge Farm)
Marzipan (it will be in a tube)
½ cup sliced almonds (should be flat-looking, like fingernails)
Red fruit leather or red licorice
Sugar for decorating
1 egg yolk
2 Tablespoons water
Raisins
Thaw the two pastry sheets. Lay one out flat on a floured surface. Roll about half of the tube of marzipan into small pea-sized balls. Lay them all over on top of your bottom sheet of pastry. Top with second sheet of pastry, so you have a marzipan sandwich. Cut so outline looks like a dragon. Pinch some ridges down your dragon’s back, puff up some eyelids, put raisins in for eyes. Mix egg yolk and water together to make an egg wash. Use a small paintbrush to brush entire dragon with this egg mix. Use your fingers to gently seal the edges of your pastry together. Push almonds into back for scales and onto feet for dragon toenails. Sprinkle dragon all over with light dusting of sugar. Bake on cookie sheet as directed. Cut a tongue shape out of fruit leather and slip into snout. Yum. Slay and eat.
Leftovers: Roll more marzipan peas, cover them with pastry bits and roll in your hands into egg shapes. Decorate with sprinkles or food coloring in wash. Bake until light brown. Now you have either some fancy dragon eggs or a pile of fewmets (such a great word – means dragon poop!).
Pretzels
Ingredients:
1 Tablespoon instant, dry yeast
1 1/2 cups warm water
1 Tablespoon honey or sugar
1 Tablespoon salt
4 cups flour
1 egg for egg wash, beat and add a few drops of water
Salt — kosher or sea salt to sprinkle on pretzels
Directions:
Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Combine first four ingredients in mixer bowl and allow to sit for five minutes. Start mixing and add flour, 1/2 cup at a time. Mix until dough leaves sides of bowl; it should be soft, not sticky. Remove from bowl and divide into 12 parts. Shape each part into your favorite shape, then place on two greased cookie sheets (or use silpats on sheets). Mix egg with a bit of water and brush gently on each pretzel shape. Sprinkle with ground kosher or sea salt.
Bake 13-15 minutes until golden brown.
